The story of the company began in 1970, when Becker/Jani was created by Ben Becker, Dick Jani and Charlie Sutherland. All three were employed at J.M. Kesslinger in Newark when they decided to venture out on their own. Their first office was in the basement of a building in Newark and featured red shag carpeting and red IBM Selectric typewriters. Behind a striking receptionist at a clear Lucite desk was a large mural that looked like something you'’d find on the set of Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In from the early '70s.

In the early '80s, Robert Becker began working at Becker/Jani, as did Peter. They had been good friends ever since 7th grade, when Robert crashed one of Peter's parties. As colleagues, they earned $50/week, and as friends, they spent it just as quickly. Over the next few decades the company evolved, and friends have become business partners. Today, Becker Guerry continues a great tradition of supporting the marketing requirements of a few great companies that want more from their advertising budget.
